I became a driving instructor & started Alpha Drive School in 2017, seeking a career change after many years working in a corporate IT/Telecommunications environment .
I became a driving instructor & safer drivers coach not only as I enjoy the skill of driving, I also wanted to make a positive difference in my local community helping the next generation become responsible, competent & safer drivers.

I enjoy meeting people from all different backgrounds and levels of driving experience and tailor my lessons accordingly. I am friendly, patient, calm and passionate about driving . I get great satisfaction helping others learn and embrace the important life skill of driving.

BASIC DRIVING TECHNIQUES :
can make your drive a lot more comfortable.
Driving posture
How important do you think it is to adjust your seat and the controls in your car to suit your height and build?
The answer is very important! It doesn’t just help with your comfort level but it also reduces fatigue, improves your control, and allows the safety features of your car to do their thing.
Seatbelts
Wear your seatbelt low, flat and firm.
Low – When you connect your seat belt, make sure it is under your waist, this is to make sure your body weight is fully secure
Flat – The belt must be kept flat and there shouldn't be any twists, turns or folds
Firm – Every now and then, pull your seat belt so it removes any slack.
Airbags
Airbags can be life savers, however, by not adjusting your seat and steering wheel to suit your body, the airbag will become a lot less effective if you are involved in a crash.
To get the most benefit from the driver’s airbag, the steering wheel should be adjusted to face the driver’s chest rather than face.
Braking techniques
Braking hard and fast can cause skidding and a loss of control, especially on gravel or wet roads. A two stage process should be used when you brake:
First put some light pressure on the brake
Then progressively increase pressure to bring your vehicle to a stop.
Steering techniques
Below are some handy techniques to help you better control your car when driving
Make sure you steer the car smoothly and, try to avoid sudden movements
Slow down before turning and wait until your car starts to straighten before accelerating
When steering, keep both hands on the outside of the steering wheel, and place your thumbs along the seam of the wheel.
GUIDE FOR THE DRIVING TEST:
* Check your rear view mirror before stopping, slowing or vehicle position changing.
* Perform head checks for your blind-spots when leaving/returning to the kerb, left/right turning & lane changing.
* Be alert & obey traffic signs, signals & road markings.
* Concentrate on your driving. Do not talk unnecessarily to the examiner.
* Give way where necessary
* Use the 3 seconds (4 plus seconds in the wet) gap rule between you & the vehicle in front for safety & smooth driving technique.
* Stop completely (car is motionless) at a stop sign line & or marking before moving off.
* Don’t exceed speed limit or drive slow either to help maintain traffic flow
* Drive in the left-hand lane where possible. The right lane should only be used for overtaking.
* Indicate early
* Stay calm & take it easy
* Test goes for approximately 30 minutes.
What are the accredited TMR Driving School Logbook rules?
Learner drivers who complete a 1 hour structured driving lesson with an accredited TMR driving school can record 3 hours in their Learner driver log book.
This allows for a maximum of 10 driving tuition hours to be recorded as 30 hours.
In addition, learner drivers who are 25 or older will no longer be required to present a Learner driver log book prior to attempting the driving test.

Where can I get the licence & testing information ?

How do I get my learner licence?
You must obtain a QLD learner licence at the TMR before you can learn to drive.
You need to pass a Driver’s Knowledge Test (DKT) and eyesight test.
The DKT is a computer based road rules knowledge test. You have to answer 45 questions and answer correctly at least 41 to pass.
You can attempt the DKT at any TMR office, if you fail you can retry.
Once you passed the DKT, you will be issued with a Learner licence and Learner Driver Log book.
Above information can be found on the TMR website
https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/licensing
What happens after obtaining my learner licence?
You will be given a Learner Driver Log Book for you and your supervising driver(s) to record your driving experience.
If you are under 25 years old, you will have to log at least 100 hours ( min 10hrs night driving) of supervising driving before you can attempt the driving test. If you are 25 or more, you will not need a Log Book.
100 hours of supervising driving does not mean 100 hours with an instructor, a family member or friend can supervise you and sign off your log book as well.
However, 1 hour with a licensed instructor will count as 3 hours in your Log Book, up to 10 hours of actual driving lessons (counting for 30 hours in your Log Book).
Should I learn from my parents or from a driving Instructor?
You should learn the fundamentals with an instructor: Often a student can learn bad habits from their parents/friends which can make it harder to unlearn.
A professional instructor will teach you the correct techniques and give you the discipline to apply these automatically enabling you to become a safer low risk driver.
In between driving school instructor lessons, you should also practice with your parents/friends . Practice what you have learnt in the instructors lessons as this helps fast track your learning skills.
How long will the lesson be and how many will I need?
We recommend 2 hour lessons. In 2 hours you will have more time to put into practice what your instructor explains. This will cut down the number of lessons needed, helping to reduce the overall cost.
We will assess each driver during the first lesson and give an estimate of how many lessons will be needed to pass the test or to be able to drive under family or friends supervision.
Hazard Perception Test:
Prior to taking the practical driving test to gain your P1 licence you must pass a hazard perception test.
The HPT is a computer-based touch screen test that measures your ability to recognise potentially dangerous situations on the road and respond appropriately. It aims to make sure learner drivers have enough hazard perception skills to progress to a P1 licence.
The test questions and situations focus on the five most common crash types for QLD provisional drivers.
You should only attempt the HPT when you have sufficient driving experience, have carefully studied the Hazard Perception Handbook and applied the information to your driving. You can continue to drive on your learner licence for as long as you need, provided you pass a Driver Knowledge Test and pay the test and licence fees.
